An existing dirt road north of town was widened and paved on an accelerated schedule after the 1982 notice to provide a second way out of Mammoth Lakes. Originally proposed as the Mammoth Escape Route, it was renamed the Mammoth Scenic Loop after local business owners objected that the name frightened visitors.
